Dialysis Education in India

Dialysis technology is different from other technologies like Lab sciences, Radiology and imaging technology. Lab and radiology is mainly of diagnostic whereas Dialysis is of therapeutic. Dialysis is done to patients with chronic kidney disease during the procedure the blood is taken out of the body and circulated in an extra corporeal circuit for 4hours. During process there is risk of many complications which may even turn fatal to the patient. Hence person involved in dialysis should be highly trained and undergo continuous up gradation of knowledge pertaining to dialysis. In India there is there are only 1000 nephrologists and its impossible for nephrologists to be with patient during entire 4 hrs. So the dialysis workforce should be qualified with at least B.Sc degree in Dialysis technology with adequate work experience. A model of Rehabilitation council of India can be followed as present dialysis workforce with only working experience may take up a bridge course and allowed to work and future generation interested taking dialysis technology as profession  needs to qualified in the field of dialysis technology
The list of Colleges and Universities that presently offer Dialysis technology courses are
1. Sri Ramachandra University
M.Sc Renal Sciences and Dialysis Technology
B.Sc Allied Health Sciences (Dialysis Technology)
2. Amrita University
                        M.Sc Dialysis Therapy
3. Bharath University
M.Sc Renal Sciences and Dialysis Technology
                       B.Sc Allied health sciences

Diploma in Dialysis Technology
Approximately 40 more institutions offer diploma in dialysis technology

Problems of Dialysis Technology in India:
The importance of dialysis technology is overlooked in India.  The patients who undergo dialysis procedure are taken care by highly unqualified personnel without knowledge or experience in dialysis. The dialysis procedure is a treatment and often done by untrained personnel.
In western world the dialysis profession is regulated with appropriate licensing authority to the professional and mandatory renewal of license at definite interval. In India no such mechanism prevails and there is no regulatory body for paramedical professional.
152,000 new ESRD patients would require dialysis or transplantation every year in India.  It is estimated that around 2000 and more were working in the field of dialysis. The present resources and  skill for taking care of this large case load are currently inadequate to meet the demand
There is a great need for streamlining the Dialysis profession as now many Universities and College started offering courses in Dialysis technology.
